Pat Broome is an independent scholar, historian and observer of humanity. This transplanted
Texan lives with her husband Dennis, her son Jonathan and two canine companions, Nelson
and Dax, in Veneta, Oregon (Fall 2004)
"I am still an independent scholar and observer of humanity. I have been doing volunteer
cataloging twice a week at the Fern Ridge Library on a regular basis for the past year and a
half. I was the recipient of the 2003 Volunteer of the Year Award for the library. I have also had
a new recruit to my canine crew. I adopted another Beagle last year. Gorak (aka “The
Instigator”) joins Dax (aka “The Slug”) and senior ranking Cocker Spaniel (Vice Admiral
Nelson, RN Retired)." (Spring 2006)
Pat is a much-valued Contributing Editor for Groundwaters. She was the first of the current
staff members to contribute a story to the magazine. It appeared in the very first issue and was
titled “Revolt in a Nunnery.” Pat is our main proofreader and catches many of our typos and
other errors before we go to print.
Pat is currently the board chairperson for the Fern Ridge Library Board and is a well-
respected colleague.
She finished a one-year certification program in Health Records Technology with a 4.0 GPA
at Lane Community College in June 2010. She’s now a member of the American Academy of
Professional Coders and is currently enrolled in an on-line Medical Coding course in
preparation for taking her National Certification Examination for Medical Coding on December
10, 2010. (November 2010)
