"I want to thank you again for writing and publishing my father's story about the
Beaverton War Memorial Park. [See p. 25, Vol. 3 No. I, Fall 2006]
I was holding my father's hand when he passed away at 12:30 am on Thursday,
November 30, 2006, at Beaverton Rehabilitation Center. His memorial service was
held at 11:00 am at Young's Funeral Home with a private interment at Sunset Hills
Memorial Park at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 5th. His closed casket was draped
with an American flag and presented to Marilyn by the American Legion Post #124
Honor Guard. Taps were played. His favorite scripture was shared: "Greater love has
no one than this that he lay down his life for his friends" - John 15: 13. State
Representative Mark Haas lent us his favorite quote to add to the program, as he felt
it exemplified my father's life: "The best use of your life is to live your life so that the
use of your life outlives your life" - Anon. His friend Millie Creamer sang "How Great
Thou Art ", "Amazing Grace" and "God Bless America" (which always brought a tear
to my dad's eye). "The Old Rugged Cross" played in the background as Chaplain
Wally Johnston of the Beaverton Police Dept. led the service, sharing stories about
my dad and inviting a half dozen other friends to do so also. We laughed a lot, cried a
little - with tears of thankfulness, as Chaplain Wally shared with everyone how I had the
blessing of being able to pray with my dad to invite Jesus into his heart to be his Lord
and Savior, this past September, and how he continued to pray with me and others,
putting his trust in the Lord right to the very end.
On Memorial Day, November 11, 2006, Beaverton's Mayor Rob Drake unveiled a
large granite stone tile that is set in the walkway of the park which reads: "Memorial
Park Dedicated to Robert "Bob" Caufman - November 11, 2006 Bob Caufman was
instrumental in turning a simple grassy patch into a city attraction, a destination and a
quiet sanctuary for peaceful reflection. Bob's personal commitment and motto: "If you
don't ask, you don't get" has made Memorial Park a beautifully treasured piece of
history - Our thanks and appreciation to Bob Caufman for his vision and inspiration."
