Valiantly, Inez de Castro sat her throne.
Her husband, Dom Pedro, at last had known
The triumph of restoring her royal seat.
Adoring countrymen fell at her feet.
He restored what his father had deprived her of.
This former mistress, now wife – his life-long love.
Though her line was noble, for reasons of state
She seemed a rival; hence the king’s hate.
The fourth Alfonso disdained his son’s mate
With Pedro off soldiering, he sealed her fate.
He rode to the convent where Inez had fled
And has his minions stab her. When dead
She lay on the ground for two long years.
The son forgiving the father – It appears –
Or did he? When Alfonso, in his turn, died
He did not rest beside his son’s bride.
As courtiers kissed her garment’s hem,
She, tragically, had no sense of them.
Could she be regal? Did she seem brave?
As she sat propped there, dug up from her grave?
