There is a silence
amid the muted roars and thunders
of a winter sea:
In the curl of a wave
before it breaks,
in the instant the fans of spray
hover at their highest point
before falling back:
in the rock-held pools
between each wave’s
exuberant assault:
a heartbeat’s moment,
a silence neither of expectation
nor regret –
a stillness so complete
that it is only what is –
not what was, or will be,
but the eternal moment of now.
